Throughout a career that spanned five decades, Cecil Beaton established a reputation as a master of portrait and fashion photography. He helped to create a celebrity culture that pre-empted social media, and contributed to the development of photographic art. Having become one of the beau monde, he adored fame. From his early high profile portraits for “Vogue” and “Vanity Fair” which led on to Hollywood glamour, and ultimately becoming the Royal photographer, he is an icon of the 20th century.
The exhibition at the State Hermitage museum, will bring Beaton to a wide Russian audience. It is to feature almost a hundred images, with the majority of vintage prints complemented by modern prints. Both Sothebys and Conde Nast, together with the V&A and Royal Collection have partnered with the Hermitage.
